Elton NOT Planning to Retire Next Year

He has sold 260million records, won five Grammys, an Oscar, 11 Ivor Novellos and has played more than 3,000 gigs.

But Sir Elton John is set to hang up the microphone for good after telling friends he will announce his retirement next year, the Daily Mail can reveal.

The singer, who seems to have slimmed down considerably in the past few months, is planning to call time on his stellar career in March – marking his 70th birthday and a 50-year songwriting partnership with Bernie Taupin.

He looked remarkably trim as he posed beside 18-year-old Lottie Moss, sister of supermodel Kate, at a benefit dinner in London on Thursday night.

Sir Elton, who is worth an estimated £200million, is understood to have lost around a stone and a half after hiring three full-time chefs for his homes in Windsor, the South of France and the US. He also plays tennis several times a week.

He originally planned to retire in 2018 and is understood to have brought the date forward after disappointing recent chart performances, and so he can spend more time with his young family. He is also keen to do more to raise funds for his charitable Elton John Aids Foundation.

Sir Elton, born Reginald Dwight, married David Furnish two years ago and they have two children through a surrogate mother. Of his decision to retire, a friend said last night: ‘Elton has seen and done it all, and has nothing left to prove.’

Elton has issued a statement:

Don’t believe what you read in the papers today. There is no truth to the rumours that I am planning to retire.

In fact, I am looking forward to celebrating 50 years of collaborating with my partner-in-song, Bernie Taupin, next year.
