Elton Phoned Watford Striker After Match

The 68-year-old Rocket Man singer has been a life-long supporter of the club and became the club's chairman and director in 1976.

Lifelong president Sir Elton reportedly surprised striker Troy Deeney by calling his mobile phone while the footballer was in the car with his mum.

Congratulating the player on the Hornets' promotion, Elton has promised to come to a match to watch the players live.

Stunned football player Troy, 26, said: "It’s been mad, a lot of people who I thought didn’t have my number have been on the phone.

"I’ve had a few nice messages - Steve Evans at Rotherham called to wish us all the best, and on Monday I was in the car with my mum and Elton John phoned, so that was a surreal moment."

He added: “Obviously my mum was buzzing as well because this guy is a legend, so for Sir Elton to be phoning her son was a bit mad.

"Unfortunately he’s a little bit busy so he can’t come to the last game - he’s got a gig somewhere - but he’s going to try and come to the first game next season if he can move his diary around."

Explaining a little about their conversation, Troy said Elton told him 'nice things' and he would prefer to keep the details "between him and me".

He added: "Considering I had never even met him before he came to open a stand named after him earlier this season, I thought that was a nice touch."

Elton took to Instagram to praise the players at Watford FC, telling fans the club is in "the best shape ever".

He said: "Congratulations to EVERYONE at the club!! - the managers, the player and all the back room staff. Also to the Pozzo family, for moving the club forward.

"It is in the best shape ever. And of course to all the supporters who have been magnificent all season. Today has been a very happy for me, David and our boys."
