Today Interview - Part Two
"We've become baby bores!" John laughed during the second part of his exclusive interview with TODAY's Matt Lauer on Tuesday. "I used to say to people ... 'Oh, God...' people sending pictures of their kids at Christmas. What do we do now? We send pictures of our kids at Christmas. We're the biggest hypocrites of life."
The "we" refers to his partner, filmmaker David Furnish, whom John will marry in May. (The two were civilly committed in 2005.) The pair has two young sons, 3-year-old Zachary and 14-month-old Elijah, who have helped turn the couple into as regular a set of dads as you could expect, considering John's profession.
John's Las Vegas residency helped create a real structure for their family. The foursome stays in an apartment while he's performing in the city, and has access to a garden and a pool. The kids are in their bath at 6:30 p.m. each night, and John is onstage an hour later.
"The children love it," said John. "They're not gambling and going to strip shows. They're having a happy life with us, they're in the garden playing, swimming."
"This is the closest we get to 9 to 5," said Furnish, who joined in on the interview. "A real routine."
But the pair's nuptials in the U.K. next month are also very much on their minds.
"I'm very proud of Britain and the laws that we've seen come into existence since we've been together," John said. "So for this legislation (gay marriage legalized in England) to come through is joyous, and we should celebrate it. We shouldn't just say, 'Oh, well, we have a civil partnership. We're not going to bother to get married.' We will get married."
For now, John can't help but look around in delighted surprise at the turn his life has taken at the age of 67. He joked, "If you'd looked at my life five years ago and you'd have told me this was going to happen, I'd have said, 'You've put acid in my drink.'"
