Elton Talks About Being Bullied
The Rocket Man relived his secret, telling how he was the ‘perfect candidate’ for ‘cruel and disgusting’ abuse.
‘It was about control and them being able to keep me under their thumb, and I was the perfect candidate for it. Even though I was famous and a big deal, it doesn’t matter – it’s who you are underneath that. I was always kind of shy and intimidated,’ the 65-year-old said.
‘One was violent and the other two were mentally violent. They were important people in my career and my personal life,’ he added.
Sir Elt said the individual who beat him was ‘someone who was close to me and involved in my career’.
The singer was locked in an ugly legal battle with his former lover and business manager, John Reid, 11 years ago, whom Elton sued for ‘treachery’.
Now he and husband David Furnish fear for their one-year-old lad Zachary. ‘I know by being two same-sex parents that when my boy goes to school, he’s going to have some people saying, “Oh you don’t have a mummy,”’ he sighed.
Sir Elton wants other people to ‘defend’ themselves if they are facing the same hell, as it could result in more suicides after a spate of deaths among young gay men in the US.
‘Too many young people have committed suicide because they’ve been frightened of 15- to 16-year-olds,’ said the star, who revealed two years ago how an ex-boyfriend took his own life after struggling with his sexuality.
Joining Lady Gaga, godmother to his son, in a crusade against bullies, he urged victims to ‘snitch on them. Try to defend yourself, not like me, who hid it and thought it was OK to just go on like it.’
He told E! News: ‘Your insecurities are what drive you to do this. You need to consider your consequences. I’m sure underneath it, you’re very nice people. We’ve all made mistakes in our life.’
