Sir Elton Supports Sheffield Eagles with Anti-Homophobia
Sir Elton John has sent a message of support to Sheffield Eagles RFC after hearing of their planned stand against homophobia during their Co-operative Championship game, this Sunday.
Eagles players will become the first professional sports team in the UK to wear a kit bearing an anti-homophobia slogan when they compete against Widnes Vikings at Bramall Lane, Sheffield.
Sir Elton, currently in Los Angeles following his world-famous annual Oscars party, took time out of his schedule to applaud the efforts of Sheffield Eagles and all those involved in this historic stand against homophobia.
He said: “I am delighted to hear about Sheffield Eagles’ initiative. I feel that an enormous step forward is being undertaken when Rugby League recognises the diversity of human sexuality. I applaud all those involved in this initiative. Best wishes and love, Elton John.”
Sheffield Eagles will sport a specially commissioned bespoke kit brandishing the slogan ‘Homophobia: Tackle It!’ when they take to the field on Sunday.
The kit - a first for professional sport has been joint funded by LGBT History Month and Pride Sports to help support equality and diversity within Rugby League.
