Leon & Elton at Rock n' Roll Hall of Fame Induction
On Monday, March 14, Elton inducted Leon Russell into the Rock and Roll Hall Of Fame. The Induction Ceremony took place at the Waldorf Astoria in New York City, and will be shown on Sunday at 9 p.m. E.D.T. on the Fuse cable channel.
Leon was inducted into the category of The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Award for Musical Excellence (previously the Sidemen category). During the induction speech Elton said that when he first met Leon he looked like "something from outer space." Leon thanked Elton for their collaboration on The Union, and said that Elton "found me in a ditch at the side of a highway of life and took me up to the high stages with big audiences, and treated me like a king."
At the end of the ceremony Elton, Leon and Doctor John all backed Lloyd Price in a performance of 'Stagger Lee', and then for the finale Darlene Love, Bette Midler, Elton, Alice Cooper and Neil Diamond performed 'Da Doo Ron Ron' along with Leon Russell on piano, as he was for the original 1963 Phil Spector-produced version of that song.
Elton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1994.
