Elton to Appear at Billy Elliot Reunion

Once it might have been thought that a musical tale about an aspiring 11-year-old dancer set during the miners' strike would have limited, perhaps niche, appeal. Then Billy Elliot sprang on to the silver screen. Next he took to the stage. Now, five years on from the story's West End debut, it is a global phenomenon.

Tomorrow night 19 Billy Elliots – past, present and future – will appear together in London to celebrate the birthday of the live production. After that, fans in South Korea, Japan, Germany and Holland await Billy's arrival.

The three men responsible, Stephen Daldry as director, Lee Hall as writer and Elton John as composer, are to join current and former cast members and their families for what promises to be an emotional and chaotic night at the Victoria Palace theatre.

"We're doing it to get back as many as we can of the kids who performed in London," Daldry said. "I suppose you'd call the finale we're planning a Billy megamix.

"It will be very moving. A lot of these boys are big boys now, the oldest is 20, he's in Dirty Dancing. It was such a unique moment in their lives and of course it's astonishing to see them all grown up. When we have these get-togethers it's like a big Polish wedding. It's huge fun."

The musical, based on the successful film, opened five years ago and since then 22 boys have played the part of Billy on the London stage. A Sydney version of the show followed in 2007 and the hugely successful Broadway version – it won 10 Tonys – in 2008. Next up is Chicago, from where Daldry has just returned for tomorrow's very special show.

He said the timing was good. It is a production that resonates ever more loudly with the times. The first number has banners saying Save Our Community and Americans get that, particularly in Chicago, said Daldry. "That blue-collar audience really understands it, that their industries and communities are under threat."

But Daldry admits surprise at just how much American audiences love the show. "It is basically a strong piece of political theatre which is not even-handed and is not pretending to be even-handed. It wears its heart and politics on its sleeve."

It is also, of course, an almost absurdly moving story of one boy achieving his dream of becoming a ballet dancer in the face of adversity – one that has encouraged producers to venture into foreign-language productions with Korea in August, Japan in 2011, to be followed by Germany and Holland.

It is not an easy process. Daldry said: "The issue with the show is that it is hand-made each time and it has to be hand-made because of the children. It's not a show that can be mass-manufactured. In some senses we all wish it was because we wouldn't have to worry about it so much. The emotional investment everybody makes is huge, it has to be huge. It's not Mamma Mia! It is not a contained production that is easy to maintain. This is a nightmare to maintain. And it's expensive."

To give an example, Daldry reels off the problems encountered in Chicago. "There are 160 of us in Chicago, in that we've had to move there to put the show on. I know, it's insane. But if you just look at it from the kids' point of view you have ballet teachers, tap teachers, gymnastic teachers, choreographers, then there's the academic teachers, their chaperones, their parents, the physiotherapists. It just goes on and on and on."

Part of its Broadway success, Daldry believes, is that they have remained faithful to the original and all the actors have to master an accent that is difficult to get right – Geordie. "We take a lot of care over it. The actors have dialect training even before they come in to the audition. What the American audience wants is authenticity. The idea that they would want a pale imitation of an English show is nonsense."

Part of the challenge for future productions will be finding the dialect equivalent of Geordie in countries like Japan.

Daldry is one of Britain's most respected film and theatre directors and has been nominated for an Oscar for each of his three movies – Billy Elliot, The Hours and The Reader. Like many others, he sees a West End that is in good shape with strong productions and record audience numbers. "There is a strength within the leadership of our subsidised sectors that is really feeding the West End. Whether that's the Young Vic or the National Theatre or the Donmar or the Royal Court. It's about the leadership of those organisations as much as the funding of those organisations."

But we should enjoy it while it lasts. "There are draconian cuts round the corner which everyone is bracing themselves for. The boom that we are currently seeing could well turn into a retreat because the government will cut. It is totally inevitable. It will cut schools, it will cut healthcare, it will cut the armed forces, so it will have to cut the arts."

Politicians have not been shy in trying to grab some of the Billy action. Earlier this month four Billys were invited to Downing Street to meet Gordon Brown, Alistair Darling and Peter Mandelson. John Prescott was a regular showgoer and even Tories have been in the audience. "Boris Johnson thought it was a total misrepresentation," said Daldry. "We were very happy about that."

But it was not until recently that someone central to the show, Arthur Scargill, came to see it. "He loved it and I was really pleased by that."

Daldry is immersed in Billy Elliot but has other irons in the fire, including talking to Disney about a musical version of Dumbo. "I want to do Dumbo. Dumbo's fantastic because it's weird and dark and deeply moving. It's one of the oddest Disney movies, I think."

Before then will be another film but he is reluctant to say what it might be. "You never know you're doing a movie until you're actually physically doing it. There are so many reasons for it not to be made."

Daldry returns to Chicago at the weekend to continue putting the cast through its paces. The Billys over there are Swiss, Mexican, Canadian and Chinese. "We get plaudits for diversity of casting but it's just something we have to do, we have to cast the best kids."

It has become a huge part of Daldry's life. "The funny thing about Billy Elliot I can honestly say, in these five years, I've had the best nights of my life in the theatre. Particularly when a new child gets into the show and you watch them doing well. It is blissful."

Elton at Meydan, Dubai

Elton performed a 90 minute set alongside Carlos Santana last night starting at 11pm, to help launch Meydan - Dubai's new racing centre. His performance was in front of the worlds largest LED screen.

How Elton Spent his Birthday

The singer and musician celebrated his 63rd birthday on Thursday in Cape Town, where he stayed in the R55000-a-night presidential suite of a top hotel.

The publicity-shy pop sensation, who this week announced plans to team up with Lady Gaga for charity, played to a packed show at Kirstenbosch Gardens on the same day.

On the eve of his birthday, John ordered 16 pizzas from a small restaurant and take-away, Ciao Amici. They proved to be a hit with the musician, and now the shop is renaming his favourite pizza - topped with rocket, mushrooms, peppers, salami, sun-dried tomatoes and mozzarella - "Elton's Rocket Man".

Alan Pluke, chef of the pizzeria in Bergvliet, delivered the food, which cost R1490, to John after his show on Wednesday.

"They asked Elton what he wanted for dinner, he said pizza, so his staff placed an order with us," said Barry Brooks, who owns Ciao Amici. "Apparently Elton said it was the best pizza he ever tasted."

The star clearly has a healthy appetite. Witnesses spotted him tucking into sushi and a club sandwich at the One&Only Hotel.

On Tuesday night John arrived fashionably late at a charity function hosted at the hotel's ballroom. Dressed in black, with demure spectacles and one cross-shaped diamond-encrusted earring, he was seen quaffing champagne and hobnobbing with owner Sol Kerzner.

The bash, with proceeds going to the Elton John Aids Foundation, cost R10000 a head. Guests included John's civil partner, David Furnish, singer Annie Lennox, rugby star Bryan Habana and his blonde wife Janine and former Springbok captain Francois Pienaar.

SIR ELTON JOHN spent his 63rd birthday on Thursday (25Mar10) in South Africa visiting a HIV awareness centre to see how the money from his AIDS Foundation has been spent.

The veteran musician has donated $15 million (£10 million) from his charity to help set up projects in the country, to educate youngsters about the dangerous disease and help prevent its spread.

And the Rocket Man timed this week's (beg22Mar10) visit to coincide with his birthday celebrations - spending the big day with his partner David Furnish and a group of soccer-loving teenagers at the Football for Hope Centre (FFH), set up by the Grassroots Soccer charity, just outside Cape Town.

The singer says, "Soccer stars are the most powerful role models for young people today so it's fantastic that organisations like Grassroots Soccer are harnessing that power to educate young people about HIV. I can't think of a better way to celebrate my birthday."

Sir Elton John to Perform at Ryan White Benefit

Sir Elton John is making a special trip to Indianapolis next month to lead a celebration of the life of Ryan White -- a Kokomo teen who died of AIDS 20 years ago in April -- The Children's Museum is announcing today.

White's mother, Jeanne White-Ginder, who lives in Florida, said Monday that she wrote the superstar a note, asking whether he would perform in honor of her son, who died April 8, 1990, at age 18.

John was a pallbearer at White's funeral, along with Howie Long and Phil Donahue, who, Ginder said, will be the event's emcee.

"This is going to be a historical moment," said Jeffrey H. Patchen, president and chief executive officer of the museum, which houses White's former bedroom in its permanent "The Power of Children: Making a Difference" exhibit.

John will take the stage April 28 at Clowes Memorial Hall at Butler University. It will hold about 2,100 for the event, according to The Children's Museum.

White contracted HIV/AIDS through a blood transfusion, then struggled to continue to attend school. John became a friend after the boy said he admired the singer because he didn't mind being unique, Ginder said.

A select number of event tickets will be offered to the public. They will go on sale at 10 a.m. April 5 at the Clowes box office and through Ticketmaster for $150 to $350.

Proceeds will support the museum's "Power of Children" exhibit and the Elton John AIDS Foundation.

Elton Sings Duet with Annie Lennox, Port Elizabeth May be Cancelled Due to Thunderstorm

"And now, I have a little surprise for you..." says Elton John. Annie Lennox steps onstage and launches into a duet of Daniel. Kirstenbosch goes nuts. By this point it is drizzling steadily but nobody looks like they're leaving anytime soon.

This is just one highlight among a long set list. John takes the stage promptly at 7om to a dramatic overture. He is dressed slightly more soberly than he did 30 years ago in an embroidered coat. His accent is a smooth hybrid of American and British. His face is more battle-scarred than you'd imagine but then again, the man has lived a very full 63 years (today is his birthday, by the way, so anyone heading to the second concert should think of starting a birthday song).

IT’S all systems go for the much-anticipated Elton John concert in Port Elizabeth tomorrow night, but if predicted heavy rains and lightning cause a safety concern the show might have to be called off.

The British pop icon is set to perform to a capacity crowd at the south campus sports fields at NMMU.

Loryn van Eck, an event consultant for Magnetic Storm, said members of the venue organising committee would monitor the situation and call off the show if there was a threat to anyone’s safety.

She said there was no alternative venue for the concert, so in the event of a threat due to the weather the show might be called off.

“The committee will be monitoring the situation closely and they will make the call if they decide there may be a threat to safety.

“The concert is going ahead as planned and we recommend that people wear hooded raincoats. People with umbrellas might obstruct the view for those behind them and they will be asked to move to the sides.”

There was no threat to the stage or sound and lighting equipment as there was a roof over the stage and it was positioned out of the wind.

“Fans can bring in their own chairs but they will only be allowed to be seated around the perimeter of the field to avoid blocking the view.

“We are expecting the elderly and those who are pregnant to be in attendance, so it’s fair that we allow the fans to bring in chairs,” Van Eck said.

About 9000 tickets for the 10000 capacity venue have been sold.

The box office will open at 2.30pm for those who do not have tickets. The show starts at 7.30pm.

“There are very good chances of rainfall for Friday, especially to the west and north-west of Port Elizabeth, with isolated heavy falls of rain expected along the Tsitsikamma coast and adjacent interior on Friday afternoon,” SA Weather Service forecaster Deon van der Mescht said.

The rain is expected to spread along the coast in the afternoon.

Elton Donates $1M to Mothers 2 Mothers

Sir Elton John today announced from Cape Town, South Africa, the granting of a £984,000 award to mothers2mothers (m2m) to be used to help prevent hundreds of thousands of babies across Africa from contracting the human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) through mother-to child transmission and assist mothers in staying healthy to care for their children.

The award, a multi-year grant from The Elton John AIDS Foundation (EJAF), will enable m2m to work to develop effective programmes to support clinical efforts preventing mother-to-child transmission of HIV, across sub-Saharan Africa and develop a gold standard for delivering and monitoring these programmes.

Each year, an estimated 1.4 million women living with HIV become pregnant. Without effective medical intervention and education, up to 40% of these women will transmit HIV to their children, either during pregnancy or in the first years of the infant’s life. Scientific advances and high-quality medical care have almost eradicated pediatric AIDS in resource rich countries. 91% of the global cases of mother-to-child transmission of HIV emanate from sub-Saharan Africa, where there are overwhelming systemic, societal and economic barriers to care. The grant from the EJAF will enable m2m to explore and roll out effective and affordable client interventions in over 600 health care facilities across Africa.

‘I visited mothers2mothers’ programme at Site B clinic in Khayelitsha a couple of years ago’ comments Sir Elton, ‘and was knocked out by how effective the Mentor Mother approach can be. We want an HIV-free generation in Africa and m2m is going to help us get there.’

m2m works in health care facilities partnering with doctors and nurses to meet the comprehensive needs of HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers. The organisation recruits HIV-positive mothers after they deliver their babies and trains them to work as paid professional health care providers in the clinics and maternity wards where they once received medical care. These peer educators, called “Mentor Mothers”, engage, educate and support HIV-positive pregnant women and new mothers, guiding them in measures to prevent HIV transmission to their babies and in steps to ensure they will remain healthy to raise their children. These efforts contribute to empowering women and reducing stigma by teaching people to “live positively” with HIV.

Dr. Mitch Besser, Founder and Medical Director, and Gene Falk, Co-founder and President of mothers2mothers commented: “We are overwhelmed by the incredible generosity of the Elton John AIDS Foundation. This grant comes at a pivotal time in mothers2mothers’ growth as we strive to provide more care to more mothers and babies, ensuring that they receive, understand and embrace all of the medical services that contribute to healthy HIV-free children and healthy mothers. This grant will be transformational for our organization’s ability to measure the impact of our efforts and ensure we are providing the most effective services to our families. We are thrilled to be part of this strategic partnership with EJAF.”

Since 2001, m2m has grown from a local program in the townships of Cape Town, South Africa, to a multinational organization that employs and empowers more than 1600 women living with HIV in more than 600 health care facilities in seven African countries. Currently, m2m is located in South Africa, Lesotho, Swaziland, Rwanda, Kenya, Malawi and Zambia, with expansion planned in 2010 into Uganda, Mozambique and Tanzania. In 2009, mothers2mothers enrolled nearly 300,000 pregnant women and new mothers living with HIV into its programme.

Elton, Sting, Lady GaGa for Rainforest Gig

This year’s event is more than just another benefit. The concert will also commemorate the 21st anniversary of the Rainforest Fund founded by Sting and his wife Trudie Styler in 1989 in response to a Kayapo Indian leader’s direct request for help to preserve his people’s land and culture in Brazil. So far, the Fund has worked with more than 100 local organizations, resulting in the protection of more than 115,000 square kilometers of rainforest.

“When Sting and I first visited the rainforest in Brazil around 21 years ago we observed first hand the destruction to one of the world’s most precious resources and knew we had to do something,” said Styler. “I’m very grateful for Elton John, Lady Gaga, Dame Shirley Bassey and so many others’ continuing support of the Rainforest Fund and helping to raise awareness of the importance of our global environment and take action to help save the planet and prevent further degradation.”

Along with performances by Elton, Gaga, Bassey and, of course, Sting, expect a few surprises. The evening will also include a live and silent auction taking place at a gala dinner following the concert.

Because this is a charity event, there are several different ticket packages available that include the show and the post-concert dinner, such as a package of 16 tickets priced at $50,000 and individual concert/dinner tickets going for $2,500. Those interested in one of the packages should download a ticket reply form from the Rainforest Foundation Web site. All other seats will become available by mid-April. For more information, please click here for the Foundation’s Web site.

Billy Elliot Heading to Dallas TX

Young boys will be donning ballet slippers and flying through the air at the Winspear Opera House next season as Billy Elliot The Musical headlines the 2010-11 Lexus Broadway Season, announced today.

The British extravaganza about a British blue-collar kid who wants to dance cleaned up at last year's Tony Awards, winning in 10 categories. Director Stephen Daldry and writer Lee Hall adapted their film for the stage, and Elton John provided the score.
For its special, nonsubscription holiday show, the Lexus series will present Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas! on Dec. 7-12.

This musical adaptation was a seasonal hit on Broadway in 2007 and 2008.Rock of Ages, which has been running on Broadway for a year, uses songs by such 1980s groups as Journey, Styx and Twisted Sisterto tell a story about a romance between a small-town girl and a big-city rocker. Young Frankenstein was Mel Brooks' 2007 follow-up to The Producers but only ran for 485 performances on the Great White Way.

It's not really much of a surprise that Billy Elliot will be in the Lexus series at the Winspear rather than the rival Dallas Summer Musicals at Fair Park Music Hall, because one of the Tony-winning boys who play the title role appeared in Winspear's inaugural Broadway gala in October.

The one mystery in both the Lexus and Summer Musicals seasons is why the 2008 Tony winner for best musical, In the Heights, isn't playing either series, although both Houston and Austin will see it next month.

Elton on The View

Elton Currently Working on Showstopper Music

"It's called Showstopper," he said. "Anthony Barrele, a dear friend of mine who produced this show Off- and on Broadway, co-wrote with me a screenplay years ago for Ben Stiller. It's about a theatrical family, and it takes place in the world of Broadway. Elton came on board about two years ago to produce with Ben Stiller's company — and also to write the musical within the movie. Anthony and I are writing lyrics with Elton.

"We're working on trying to get a director. It's been a long time coming, but there's some new momentum behind it so I hope it'll be coming to a theatre near you soon.

Elton Attends Next Fall Premiere

The drama, which had a nice success off-Broadway last year, suddenly became a wham bam slam glam opening. Cops. Walkie-talkies. Photographers. Public relations types with phones in every crevice announcing, "He's on his way" . . . then . . . "He's nearly here." When it began to feel Elton must be coming from Cleveland, finally came the breathless whisper "He's here." Then: "We're taking him in this entrance."

Not your usual razzmatazz jazzed up Sir Elton. Except for little dangling diamond earrings (small stones), it was a dark striped suit. Proper tie. His Sirship could have been put together by Joe Biden's stylist. And why, how, did he get involved in this show?
"David originally saw it and told me, 'I've just seen a spectacular piece of work. It's wonderful.' Our 'Billy Elliot' director also loved it. And a friend with whom I'm involved in another project wrote it. So they asked us to get involved."

You put money in it?
"Yes," said David.
"Yes," said Elton. "And it wasn't all that cheap."

The subject matter spans a five-year relationship between two gay men. One young, a Southern Christian; the other, a nonbeliever. Although what they deal with could be in any relationship -- even between a man and woman -- one then has an accident. The parents didn't know he was gay. The partner is excluded from seeing him.

But what about this so resonated with him that he felt impelled to become involved?
Against a wall in some dinky part of the theater, a somber quiet Elton John said: "David saw it several times. I read it several times. There's some of us in it. Years back I had a relationship, and I had absolutely no idea in the world he was going to do this . . . he threw himself under a truck. There was so much grief . . .

"Look, we all need love. We all have the same fears and insecurities. We should all be allowed to be free."
"It's also the right timing for this," said David Furnish. "The religious divide between right and left has gotten wider, and so the rights of gay people never got back to where it was heading."

Right after curtain, Himself was on a plane. "I have five hours in England then off to South Africa to do something with Annie Lennox on my AIDS foundation. Back here April 1 for the 'Billy Elliot' opening in Chicago."

If you ride the subway in New York City, or have even just ventured outside these past few weeks, it's been nearly impossible to miss the posters touting tonight's Broadway opening of Next Fall, a drama about an older atheist (Patrick Breen) and his hot hard-core Christian boyfriend (Patrick Heusinger — yes, Lord Marcus Beaton from Gossip Girl). Emblazoned on each ad are the words/imprimatur, “Elton John and David Furnish present ... " Which is why we were a bit shocked when, at last night's reception for the show, we learned that Sir Elton had only just seen Next Fall for the first time that evening. "Yeah, I [produced] it without seeing it,” Sir Elton told us. “I did it completely blind!”

He explained that he first became aware of the show when his husband, Furnish, went to see it at Playwrights Horizons with The Reader director Stephen Daldry. "He phoned me up after coming out of the theater and was just raving about it," said Sir Elton. "They decided it was going to come to Broadway, and they said, 'We need help as far as getting exposure, since none of the cast are household names. Would you be prepared to lend your name?' We said, 'Yeah, and if you need us to put up some money, we'll do that, too.' Because we think it's a fantastic project." With his Billy Elliot still running strong, and another stage project in development with Next Fall playwright Geoffrey Nauffts, Sir Elton is now a bona fide Broadway producer. "Yeah, never thought that would happen!" he laughed, than mused about what perk he should demand. "Maybe I can get a senior-citizen pass and get in free to matinees or something."

Man Arrested for Making Death Threat Against Sir Elton

A Georgia man who posted a video death wish against Elton John on YouTube was arrested on Wednesday.
The AP reports the man, Neal Horsley, 65, was jailed on a $40,000 bond in Carrollton, about 50 miles west of Atlanta, said Atlanta Police Sergeant Curtis Davenport.

Horsley allegedly made terrorist threats when he posted a video of himself holding a sign in front of a building he claimed contained a condo owned by John on YouTube on February 28.

Horsely was reported angry following John's comments to a magazine regarding Jesus and gays. John said he thought Jesus was a 'compassionate, super-intelligent gay man who understood human problems'.

Horsley in his video said: 'What Elton John has done is desecrated the image of the Lord Jesus Christ, blasphemed the Lord Jesus Christ.'

Jason Mraz Wants to Work with Sir Elton

Jason Mraz was one of the many celebrities who attended Elton John’s 18th annual Oscar Viewing Party in West Hollywood last night. It was a chance for him to proposition Elton John about an idea he had while touring the San Diego LGBT Community Center last week. Mraz discussed that he was hoping to talk about a possible collaboration with Elton John.

He wants to sing a modern version of “Ebony and Ivory”. To put it in Mraz’s words, an ”Ebony and Ivory of the times, for equality.” “Ebony and Ivory” is a song from the eighties that features Paul McCartney and Stevie Wonder and sent a message about about racial harmony and equality.

Jason Mraz’s idea is to bring the heterosexual community together with the LGBT community in support of the rights of gays to legally marry. Mraz has been a vocal straight ally, supporting both marriage equality and LGBT acceptance in general.

Abby Schwartz, a coordinator at the San Diego LGBT Community Center, told GLTNewsNow.com, “Jason realizes he has a platform that many do not and wants to use it to share a message of love, acceptance and equality for all.”

Betty White's Biggest Fan = Elton John

Victoria Beckham, Heidi Klum, Miley Cyrus and Simon Cowell were among the celebrity guest who stepped out for Elton John’s 18th annual AIDS Foundation Oscar party on Sunday night, but one guest was more special than the others – Betty White.

“Betty White is my Guest of Honor,” Elton told Access Hollywood before his big event held in West Hollywood. “I want to meet a legend and she is a legend!”

And the Brit even had a special place at his party for the Hollywood superstar.

“She’s sitting on my right hand side,” he sad. “I’m so thrilled that she’s coming.”

Elton explained the two had already bonded pre-party, via phone, over their shared love of canines.

“We communicate because she has a charity for dogs and I love dogs, so I made a contribution to her charity and thought, you know what, instead of just writing letters, I want to meet you, so I invited her to this,” he explained.

And photos from inside the bash showed the two sharing close moments. Elton, in blue glasses, hugged and kissed Betty who was in a dress in a similar blue shade.

EJAF Academy Awards Viewing Party 2010

Sir Elton John and David Furnish have played host to some of the world's top stars at Hollywood's biggest Oscar viewing party.
The couple's Aids fundraiser has become a staple for all those without an invite to the ceremony itself and this year's guest list read like a who's who guide to the entertainment world's biggest names.

Representing the Brits were the likes of Victoria Beckham, Mel B, Amanda Holden, Sharon and Kelly Osbourne, Katie Price and Simon Cowell.

"I'm so blown away this year, it's fantastic," Elton said ahead of the celebrations.
"It's our stable fundraiser for the whole year, this is by far the most important, it gets us the most publicity and it raises the most money.

"It's hard work because you have to walk around shaking hands with everyone but when we go home and it's all finished we've met people and we've seen great entertainment close up."

Elton added he and his partner were always anxious that the night should go perfectly. "It's something we look forward to but we're also a bit wary of as it's your baby and you want it to go well.

"The best part is when you go home at night and you think 'we did a good job'."

Sir Elton John's 2010 post-Oscars AIDS Foundation party was a hit - the singer raised a massive $3.7 million (2.5 million pounds) in just a few hours at the lavish star-studded bash. The "Rocket Man" hitmaker and his partner David Furnish invited a host of celebrities, including Betty White, Nicole Richie and Victoria Adams, to attend the 18th annual celebration, which raises money for the fight against AIDS.

After a lavish dinner and a performance by Grace Jones, guests were invited to participate in a live auction, where John sold the costume he wore at the Grammy Awards in January for $30,000 (20,000 pounds) and a watch from his collection for $90,000 (60,000 pounds).

Also up for grabs was a photo of U.S. President Barack Obama at college, which sold for $60,000 (40,000 pounds), and private tennis lessons from Andre Agassi and Steffi Graff, which raised $70,000 (47,000 pounds).

The generous host also took in $140,000 (93,000 pounds) by auctioning off a week-long stay at his home in Nice, France. He said, "I'm so blown away this year. We're supposedly struggling though a recession and yet it keeps getting better every year."
