Elton is The Dad of New Baby Boy

SIR Elton John has been named as the father of his and civil partner David Furnish's baby in official documents, fuelling speculation that the boy is the singer's biological son.

Zachary Jackson Levon Furnish-John was born by surrogate mother on Christmas Day.

Despite speculation that Furnish, 48, provided the sperm for the surrogacy because he is the younger man, it is 63-year-old Sir Elton who has been recorded as the boy’s father at the local register office in Los Angeles.

Furnish is listed as the mother in computer documents, an official told the Daily Mail.

Initially – normally on computer documentation – a father and mother are listed. However, in gay father surrogacy cases, when the actual certificate is produced, the couple can apply to have it re-issued as Parent 1 and Parent 2.

Furnish yesterday told of his joy at becoming a parent. The film producer said: "For many years we have talked about fulfilling one of our greatest wishes by becoming parents. And now this wish has been granted to us, we feel so blessed and lucky."

It was suggested last night that the birth may have cost the celebrity couple up to $1million in fees and payments to the clinic and women involved.

An official at the Los Angeles Local Registrar’s office confirmed that although the birth has not yet been registered on a certificate, computerised documents showed Sir Elton as father and Furnish as mother.

Fertility experts last night said that in gay father surrogacies, the partner listed as the father is usually the one who provided the sperm.

Sir Elton and Furnish, who have been together for 17 years and entered a civil partnership in 2005, are believed to have been present at the birth of their son at the Cedars Sinai Medical Centre in Beverly Hills.

Waiting nervously at the hospital with them were Furnish’s parents Jack and Gladys, from Scarborough in Canada.

Furnish’s younger brother Peter said: "We found out about Zachary on Christmas Day, when we got a phone call with the fantastic news and that the delivery went very well. My parents were in Los Angeles, so they were there to see the little guy."

As yet, no decision has been made on which of the two men is more likely to be the stay-at-home dad.

However, Peter said: "I think certainly when you visit any of their homes, there’s a lot of love."

He added that despite the couple’s fame, the boy will be their main priority. "I think Zachary will be the most important person in the world to them," he said.

"There will be no shortage of love and caring and support for him. Only so many kids in the world can have that, and I think he is very fortunate to have them as parents. I think they will be fantastic parents."

Last night, the baby was believed to be back at Sir Elton and Furnish’s apartment in Los Angeles. He is due to come to the UK when they return next month, ahead of a series of concerts in London and Europe. Furnish also spoke yesterday of the Ukrainian orphans he and Sir Elton tried to adopt last year.

As the Daily Mail revealed yesterday, the child was born to the unidentified woman who was not his biological mother but had carried the baby after being implanted with a donor egg from another mystery woman.

The complicated arrangement means that little Zachary effectively has two fathers and two mothers. However, the two women are likely to have signed binding confidentiality agreements to keep their identities a secret in perpetuity.

A spokesman for the Centre for Surrogate Parenting, which facilitated the birth, said the total cost for a same sex couple, including medical and legal expenses, was approximately $150,000.

However, with two mothers and given the high-profile nature of the stars involved, the figure could be as high as $1million.

When we first heard that Elton John and David Furnish had become dads to a baby, born via a surrogate mother, we knew the baby was going to be spoilt rotten.

And it looks as if we were predictably right, because as Elton headed to an LA bookshop yesterday (to pick up baby books we assume), stacks of baby goods were seen being delivered to his Beverly Hills home including a very fancy looking, expensive, technologically advanced baby chair which has it’s own iPod dock attached to it. Standard.

Meanwhile Elton has been talking about how he and David came up with the name Zachary Jackson Levon for their child. He said:

"A friend gave us a book of baby names, and we started to flick through it, but we have always loved the name Zachary and kept coming back to it. In the end, we looked at each other, and put the book back on shelf, and said, "This is it!'"
