Elton's Winter Ball

For the first time, the Elton John AIDS Foundation is holding a Winter Ball, to take place on Sunday, December 13 at the Grosvenor House Hotel in London. Elton and David Furnish will host the ball, along with sponsors Grey Goose Vodka. Elton and David say the following in their ticket invitation:

"Over the years, we have been asked many times by guests at our White Tie & Tiara Ball whether it would be possible to do a similar event for the Christmas season. So it is with great pleasure we invite you to join us this December for the inaugural Character & Cocktails: Winter Ball sponsored by our friends Grey Goose. The event transforms Grosvenor House's Great Room, taking us into the world of Grand Palais for an evening of exquisite Grey Goose cocktails, dinner and an auction of fabulous cocktail bars, each one designed by a very special supporter of the Foundation - Roland Mouret, Lily Allen and Lily Cole.

"We are particularly thrilled that a special surprise guest artist will treat us to an exclusive performance on the night.

"The Foundation prides itself not only on producing beautiful events, but on ensuring that every penny they raise goes directly to our charitable work. This event is no exception, thanks to the generosity of Grey Goose. The Foundation is now one of the largest HIV/AIDS charities in the world, yet our overheads are amongst the smallest - currently 4.3%.

"Over the past year, we have committed to initiatives that change not only the way services are received in local projects but at a national or international level. These include working with the Clinton Foundation to expand and refine treatment services for over 20,000 children in Malawi, Lesotho, Tanzania, Zambia and Kenya, and with Mothers 2 Mothers in the same countries to stop HIV-positive pregnant women transferring the virus to their babies. In Ukraine, a national programme for children will change the way HIV-positive children are told about their illness and how they are treated in school and in society.

"These programmes do not mean we have forgotten the small groups, the individual carers, the long term survivors. Our work reaches thousands of infected and affected individuals across 17 countries, including right here in the United Kingdom.

"The Winter Ball is a fantastic occasion to celebrate this work, to ensure that we can continue in the fight against HIV/AIDS and to celebrate Christmas. We really hope that the range of ticket options gives all our donors an opportunity to support this Ball.

"We look forward to seeing you there."

Elton Doesn't Know Whats Wrong with Billy

Elton John is back in good health and "raring to go".

The 62-year-old singer was hospitalised last month with a serious e-coli infection, forcing him to cancel a string of US concerts. After nine days of intravenous antibiotics treatment and close monitoring by doctors, he is "out and about" and feeling good. But Elton is still unsure about what triggered the illness.

"It was something that I've never had before - a serious e-coli infection which I got from something I ate," he said. "It was horrible, but now I'm back and raring to go. I'm out and about and I'm good."

Intravenous antibiotics were used to treat the icon.

But the star is certain it wasn't something baked by his long-term partner David Furnish.

He laughed: "No, no, David doesn't cook!"

Elton's postponed Face 2 Face concert tour looks unlikely to continue. Just as Elton is feeling better, his touring partner Billy Joel has been struck down by a mystery illness.

Elton said: "I don't know what's wrong with him. I heard he's sick. I have no idea what's going on with him."

Elton Makes First Public Appearance in 26 Days

The singer seemed to have put the bout of ill health behind him as he took to the red carpet in New York for his annual Aids Foundation benefit.

He was forced to cancel a series of gigs on his world tour after falling ill earlier this month.
Sir Elton admitted he hated letting his fans down but said he had been able to have a good rest while in hospital.
"It's the first time I've been in bed for about nine days in the whole of my life," he explained as he arrived at the charity event. "Except for maybe when I had my tonsils out."
"So, I was alright. I had a good rest. I didn't expect it.
"The worst thing was having to cancel shows. I hate that. But I'm back on my feet and I'm bouncing around now."

Despite getting the go ahead from doctors, Sir Elton has had to postpone a further two concerts he was due to perform with Billy Joel.

This time it is the American singer who has been forced to pull out for "undisclosed medical reasons".

Sir Elton's event, entitled An Enduring Vision, saw Hollywood actress Sharon Stone and former US President Bill Clinton honoured.

Bond star Daniel Craig, Tony Bennett and Courtney Love were also in attendance.

The Elton John Aids Foundation helps to fund HIV prevention programmes and aims to eliminate stigma and discrimination associated with the disease.

Last year more than $2 million was raised but the singer admitted the current economic will make it a lot harder this time.
"We are in a bad time economically and everybody's vying for attention. We mustn't let Aids get onto the back seat.
"It's very important that it stays in the forefront of our attention because it's a disease that's not going away. In fact it's really increasing in a lot of areas."

- Sky News

Sir Elton John makes the red ribbon proud with his fundraising efforts for his Elton John AIDS Foundation. His organization recognized former President Bill Clinton, Evelyn and Leonard Lauder, Sharon Stone, and Lily Safra on Monday night in New York by presenting them with Enduring Vision awards.

Since founding EJAF in the early '90s in the Unites States and his native United Kingdom, Elton has raised over $150 million for the cause. He told ET, "We live in a time where we mustn't let AIDS get forgotten about…We have to carry on the fight and get as much done as we possibly can in our small way."

Honoree Sharon Stone credits the organization with "taking away the stigma of AIDS." Soap star Susan Lucci said, "It's a cause that's so worthwhile. So many of us in the entertainment industry know so many people who this will touch. And the arts touch everyone."

In its eight year, the award acknowledges the efforts of those who contribute to heightening awareness of the HIV/AIDS epidemic. Journalist Anderson Cooper hosted the event, which featured a performance by Donna Summer.

UPDATE: 20/11 - $2 Million was raised at this event for the EJAF. Congratulations!

San Jose Postponed - By Billy This Time

Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Billy Joel and Elton John have postponed yet another Bay Area date on their “Face 2 Face” tour: a concert originally scheduled for Tuesday at the HP Pavilion in San Jose. They had previously bailed out of a gig set for this past Saturday at the Oracle Arena in Oakland.

Organizers are working to set make-up dates for the two concerts. All ticket-holders are being asked to hold on to their tickets until more information is available regarding the proposed rescheduled engagements.

The Oakland date was postponed due to concerns over John’s health - he’s been battling a serious case of e-coli bacterial infection and influenza and was advised by his doctor to postpone this Oakland concert, according to promoter Live Nation. This time around, it’s Joel who isn’t feeling well enough to play San Jose. According to another press release from Live Nation, Joel is unable to tour due to undisclosed “medical reasons.”

Frail Elton Determined to Make the Enduring Vision Gala

The star, 62, had planned to join singer Billy Joel for a gig in California last night but doctors warned it was too soon to return to the stage following his recent stay in hospital.

"They said he should take it easy as a precaution," a source revealed.

Despite his debilitating illness, the frail singer-songwriter is determined to attend tomorrow's fund-raising gala in New York for the Elton John Aids Foundation.

"It's an annual event and Elton never misses it," said our source. "He has been resting at home and is due to fly to New York today."

An Inside Look at Elton & David's LA Apartment

It’s a rock star of a Hollywood pad. And why not? It is, after all, home to a legend of the breed, Sir Elton John, and his partner, David Furnish. “We love it,” exults Furnish, who dreamed up the couple’s ode-to-the-’70s chrome-and-glass palace with his friend and designer Martyn Lawrence-Bullard. “Our goal for this apartment was neither entertaining nor having houseguests—it’s about function, about us. As a filmmaker, I needed a base here, as did Elton, who tours a lot on the West Coast. Though Elton’s definitely a maximalist, I, a more clean-line minimalist, we both wanted something very L.A., very ’70s, à la the building’s architecture. Immediately, I thought: Boogie Nights.”

“Elton’s only directive,” adds Lawrence-Bullard, “was a period vibe as backdrop for his art and color photographs,” a dazzling array of which sparkle like the rare jewels they are against the David Hicks-inspired, brilliantly hued lacquer walls. (The couple’s extensive photo collection puts them among the world’s largest private collectors.) “Beyond that, Elton just said, ‘Color. I want color.’ ”

And did he ever get it. “Martyn takes your taste and gives the most gorgeous, sexiest version of it,” says Furnish. “Not having a template style, he’s a true collaborator.”

“Hearing ’70s, automatically thinking Halston and Courrèges,” says the designer, “I told the boys: ‘What I’d really love to do is chrome and lacquer juxtaposed with Hermès-handbag kelly-green walls.’ ”

“Initially when you hear kelly green, you recoil in horror,” laughs Furnish. “ ‘Can I even imagine that on the walls?’ But then Martyn shows up with 10 color samples and you get it.” Not that it didn’t give even its initiator pause. “When the green first went up,” admits Lawrence-Bullard, “I thought, Oh my God, I hope the boys like it. But once we added the art, everything got grounded.”

Long before that point, he adds, the 3,000-sqaure-foot space had to be “brought back to its raw guts.” “The original layout, with three small bedrooms, was so claustrophobic, it took some very modern thinking,” says Furnish, “knocking down walls, raising ceilings, extending and opening up windows to realize the potential of the view—a dazzling, one-of-a-kind panorama stretching from the beach to downtown Los Angeles.

“After the initial walk-through, Elton never sees a project again until it’s finished,” explains Furnish, “which, of course, puts pressure on everybody. The first time we visited this apartment, he didn’t like much of anything. So when he finally saw the finished product, he couldn’t believe it was the same apartment. His jaw hit the floor.”

As well it should. Shades of Boogie Nights indeed! Shimmering emerald walls! Platinum-leaf ceilings! Baseboards inset with polished steel! Baths with glass-bead wallpaper, white-gold tiles! A kitchen whose crystal chandelier formerly dangled over the concierge desk in Milan’s Grand Hotel! A grand, chocolate-lacquered master suite with closets the size of small New York apartments!

And infused throughout, tying everything together—from exquisite twists of exotic glass to the Jasper Johns nipped by Lawrence-Bullard from the couple’s Atlanta gym—are the curiosity and excitement of the passionate collector. “When you’re as famous as Elton, your homes have to be your sanctuaries,” notes Furnish. (The couple have residences in Atlanta, France, Italy and England; see Architectural Digest, January 1993 and May 2000.) “You can’t go out in the real world, sit in cafés, go to museums. Consequently, the mantra behind all our homes is bringing the outside in… through things we love.

“Elton loves life; his collections celebrate that. Objects have emotion for him. As an only child with working parents, he spent lots of time alone with his records and books, all of which are now lined up, pristine, his name written on the first page, in our Windsor library. The same for the record collection that he protected with plastic over the album sleeves and that inspired him to become the artist he is. These things gave him love.

“And our homes, including now this beautiful new one, are our way of curating those things that we love. We take care of them, take time in deciding where and how to place each piece, because, in the end, you want everything to feel right, harmonious, appreciated.” He pauses. “You want it to feel celebrated.”

Please see the Architectural Digest for a fabulous slideshow.

PS: Sir Elton does own a computer!, a state of the art Apple iMac, takes pride of place in his private study. It is most likely used for monitoring sports results and news headlines.

Sir Elton May Play a Cruise Ship?

The modernization of on board shows could eventually see stars such as Elton John perform on a cruise, it has been predicted.
MSC Cruises UK and Ireland chairman Peter Pate raised the prospect as part of a cruise debate at World Travel Market.

Discussing future trends in cruising, Pate suggested that cruise ship entertainment was due a shake up to take it away from an image of theatrical dance troupes.

He used the examples of James Taylor performing on Cunard’s Queen Mary 2 and illusionist Darren Brown on a special P&O Cruises’ short voyage.

“Every line is upping its game with more named entertainment,” said Pate. “We will see more of that and it will become commonplace.

“The day is not far off when we will see Elton John on a cruise ship.”

NCL confirmed last week that new ship Norwegian Epic would feature a US tribute act Legends in Concert which has appeared in Las Vegas featuring performers in the style of Elton John and Rod Stewart.

Meanwhile, Royal Caribbean International associate vice-president and general manager Jo Rzymowska and Yachts of Seabourn director Andy Magowan both pointed to the impact of social media on the cruise industry as being a massive future influencer of consumer holidaying habits.

“Social media is a key area that will change. We’re fooling ourselves if we don’t take it seriously,” Rzymowska told the WTM audience.

Magowan added: “It is going to be massive for us. People are going to start talking about going on a cruise as a serious option.”

He and NCL UK general manager Stephen Park agreed that increased availability of cruise-only rates would allow travel agents to better differentiate themselves by adding land stays to voyages.

Park also suggested there would be more large groups booking to cruise and more niche cruise lines.

Elton Leaves Hospital - Aims to be Back on Nov 14

British singer Elton John left hospital on Thursday after being treated for a serious case of e-coli bacterial infection and influenza that forced him to cancel a string of concerts, his representative said on Thursday.

Spokesman Gary Farrow said the pop star known for hits including "Goodbye Yellow Brick Road" and "Rocket Man" was "fine", and he planned to join singer/songwriter Billy Joel on stage on Nov. 14.

John, 62, was forced to postpone five gigs in England and Ireland starting with an Oct. 23 date in Sheffield, and he also pulled out of three U.S. concerts scheduled for November 4, 7 and 10, at which he was to appear with Joel.

Elton Has Lost His Voice - May Need 4 Weeks Off

A source close to Sir Elton said: 'The feeling is Elton will be out of action for four weeks.

'His voice has temporarily gone and he has been having severe coughing bouts, so there is no way he can play concerts for a while.'

The 62-year-old singer had to cancel several concerts, but aims to rejoin BILLY JOEL on tour in the US on November 14.

Sir Elton was admitted on Friday suffering from stomach cramps and vomiting. He also had flu.

Promoters say they hope to reschedule the European dates - part of Sir Elton's Red Piano tour - for December.

Elton is Seriously Ill in Hospital

Sir Elton John was last night in hospital suffering from ‘flu with complications’.

The 62-year-old’s partner David Furnish spent most of yesterday at his bedside at King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone, London, which specialises in looking after the Royal Family.

He was also visited in his £515-a-night room by celebrity friends including artist Sam Taylor-Wood.
Sir Elton has been cared for by the hospital’s elite medical staff since Friday, when it is understood his two-week illness worsened.

Flu complications can refer to bronchitis, viral or bacterial pneumonia, muscle inflammations and infections of the central nervous system. Those at highest risk include the over-50s and children under four.

On Friday, Sir Elton cancelled the last leg of his Red Piano tour in Dublin, having earlier pulled out of concerts at Sheffield, Newcastle upon Tyne, Liverpool and Wembley. But he did play in Barcelona last Tuesday.

He also missed Boyzone star Stephen Gately’s funeral two weeks ago, with Mr Furnish attending in his absence.
Sir Elton’s spokesman confirmed that he was being treated for flu with complications but declined to elaborate beyond saying: ‘He has got an infection, flu and everything that goes with it.’

When Mr Furnish left the hospital later, dressed in black and wearing sunglasses, he said: ‘He’s OK – he’s fine.’

In 1999, Sir Elton was rushed from France to The Wellington Hospital in London to have a pacemaker fitted after tests revealed an irregular heartbeat.

He suffered addictions to drugs, alcohol and junk food in the Eighties, leaving him in a terrible physical and mental state which he blamed for the breakdown of his marriage to Renate Blauel.

The star also admitted to US talk-show host Larry King in 2002 that, like his friend Princess Diana, he was bulimic.
He said: ‘It took me 16 years of drug addiction and alcoholism to have the humility to say, “I need help.”’

King Edward VII Hospital has some of the world’s leading doctors. Royals treated there include the Queen, Philip, Charles and Sophie Wessex, who was flown there after an ectopic pregnancy. The Queen Mother and Princess Margaret were also treated at the hospital.

Exclusive Sir Elton John has been admitted to hospital for tests after pulling out of four British gigs last week.

The 62-year-old superstar spent two nights in care amid worries of an E.coli and bacterial infection.

Last night he was having tests and scans as thousands of fans worried his illness could be serious.

Sir Elton's partner David Furnish was last night at his bedside at King Edward VII Hospital in Marylebone, London.

It is thought E.coli may have developed on top of flu the Rocket Man legend had suffered all week.

Sir Elton scrapped gigs on his Red Piano tour in Liverpool, Sheffield, Newcastle, London and Dublin.

A source said: "He wants to get to the bottom of what's wrong with him. He is a singer and needs to get his voice back quickly.

"He is deeply upset that he has had to pull out of the gigs. Elton was initially only supposed to be in for one night and went in on Friday. Now he is due to come out today."

Sir Elton, who married David in a civil ceremony four years ago, plans to reschedule the gigs as soon as he gets the results back from his tests.

The star has also postponed forthcoming concerts in the US cities of Portland and Seattle, where he was due to play with Billy Joel.

Tickets Elton's spokesman said: "He is recovering from a case of serious influenza with minor complications. We are confident he will be back on stage in the very near future.

"We are also in discussions with our promoters regarding venue availability, as we are hoping to re-schedule any lost shows. All tickets for the postponed UK shows should be retained."

In 1999 Elton, who is worth £175million, was fitted with a pacemaker due to an irregular heartbeat.

He has suffered from bulimia and fought a long battle with booze and drugs but has been sober and clean for almost 20 years.
