Elton Confirmed For Perth, Darwin & Sydney This May
THE people have spoken and Elton John will perform in Darwin.
The Crocodile Rock singer will bring his stage show to the Territory capital after his Asian tour in May.
The official announcement of the tour is set to be made today but the Northern Territory News has been told Sir Elton is a certainty to play in Darwin.
Sir Elton and his band will play at TIO Stadium at Marrara on May 17.
The Northern Territory News led a public campaign to bring Sir Elton to the Top End, with readers registering their enthusiasm via the ntnews.com.au website.
The success of this campaign may lead to more major acts using similar methods to come to the Territory.
Promoter Michael Chugg has said more than 5000 people registered their interest through the website scheme, enough to convince organisers a Darwin concert will be well-attended.
Chugg hopes a successful Top End swing with Sir Elton will open the way for more major artists to come through the Top End on their way from Asia to Sydney and Melbourne.
But plans for a concert in Broome have been cancelled, making Sir Elton's Darwin concert the only one for northern Australia and a prime destination for tourist packages.
The Territory Government is understood to have come on board to assist tour managers with venue hire arrangements.
One of the greatest recording artists of all time, Sir Elton has sold more than 250 million records in a career spanning more than 35 years.
After Darwin he will perform in Perth and Sydney.
Elton John fan websites have featured some diehards trying to organise busroad trips to Darwin from Victoria for the concert.
His appeal in regional centres was realised last year when 10,000 fans went to his shows in Launceston and Townsville.
